The WWF Mozambique Country Office is financing the Southern Mozambique Marine Turtle Nesting Monitoring, Tagging and Conservation Program at 29,855.00 US dollars for the period between October 2009 to May 2010.
The Project, which is being implemented and coordinated by “Associação para Investigação Pesqueira” (AICM) under umbrella of the Turtle Working Group (GTT), aims to contribute to marine turtle conservation in Mozambique and it covers specially training, turtle and nest protection, nesting monitoring and turtle tagging, in the southern section of the Mozambican coast.
Recently, the project is monitoring marine turtle nesting, tagging and conservation along the southern Mozambique coast. A special attention is given to the stretch of coast from the south African border (Ponta do Ouro) to Santa Maria. This is considered the most important nesting area along the southern coast, specially for loggerhead and leatherback turtles.
According to Eduardo Videira, AICM Program Director, the project does some additional work, related to conservation in these areas “additionally, the project supported the filming of the turtle nesting and monitory activities, which will be part of a documentary about the Maputo Special Reserve and the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve to be broadcast on the RTP Africa TV channel”, said Mr. Videira.
The project is currently carrying daily beach patrols along the entire project sites, regular supervision visits in the areas to collect all the data sheets and the final report will be produced by May 2010. |
